Terms of Service
These terms set out the basis on which you may use this website. They are written in plain language on purpose. By using the site you accept them; if you do not accept them, please do not use the site.
1. Who we are
This website is operated by the Islands Knowledge Institute ("IKI", "we", "us"), NPF Food Court Building, Point Cruz, Honiara, Solomon Islands. You can reach us at hello@islands-knowledge.org.
2. Using this website
You may read, share, and link to the material on this site. In return we ask that you do not:
- use the site in a way that breaks the law or harms other people;
- attempt to gain access to accounts, systems, or data that are not yours;
- disrupt the site, including by automated scraping that degrades it for others;
- misrepresent your identity or your connection with IKI or our partners.
3. Membership accounts
Some parts of this site let you sign up as a member so you can receive newsletters and take part in discussion. Membership is free.
You are responsible for the accuracy of the email address you give us and for anything done through your account. Tell us promptly if you believe someone else is using it. You may close your account at any time by contacting us, and we handle the information attached to it as described in our Privacy Policy.
4. Comments and contributions
Where comments are enabled, you are responsible for what you post. Please keep contributions civil and relevant, and do not post anything unlawful, abusive, misleading, or that discloses someone else's personal information.
You keep ownership of what you write. By posting it here you give us permission to display it on this site. We may remove or edit contributions that breach these terms, and we may suspend accounts that repeatedly do so. We are not obliged to monitor comments, and removal of one does not imply that we have reviewed the others.
5. Our content
Unless stated otherwise, the writing, images, design, and publications on this site belong to IKI or to the people who created them for us. You may quote and share material with credit to the Islands Knowledge Institute and a link to the source. You may not republish substantial parts of it, or use it commercially, without our written permission.
Some material carries its own licence or credit. Where it does, that takes precedence over this section.
6. Indigenous and traditional knowledge
Much of the knowledge presented on this site originates with Indigenous and local communities in Solomon Islands and the wider Pacific. It is published here with their involvement, and publication does not transfer ownership of it to IKI or to any reader.
Traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, place names, and customary practice remain the property of the communities they belong to. If you wish to reuse such material — in research, teaching, media, or commercial work — you must seek the consent of the community concerned. We will help you make that contact where we can. Please do not treat publication on this website as permission.
7. Newsletters
If you subscribe, we will send you newsletters about our work. Every newsletter includes a link to unsubscribe, which takes effect immediately. We explain what we record about newsletter delivery in our Privacy Policy.
8. Links to other websites
We link to partner organisations, research, and other resources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their accuracy, or how they handle your information. A link is not an endorsement.
9. Accuracy and availability
We publish this material in good faith and take care to get it right, but we provide it for general information. It is not professional, legal, scientific, or financial advice, and you should not rely on it as the sole basis for a decision. Research and reporting may be superseded by later work.
We aim to keep the site available but cannot guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we may change or withdraw material at any time.
10. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, IKI is not liable for loss arising from your use of this website or from reliance on material published on it. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
11. Suspending access
We may suspend or withdraw access to the site, or to an account, where these terms have been breached or where it is necessary to protect the site or its users.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Solomon Islands, and the courts of Solomon Islands have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
