Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information the Islands Knowledge Institute collects through this website, why we collect it, and what you can do about it. We have tried to write it in plain language. If anything here is unclear, please ask us.
1. Our approach
We collect as little information about you as we can while still running this website. We do not sell your information, we do not share it for advertising, and we do not build profiles of the people who read our work. Where we can provide something without collecting personal information, that is what we do.
2. Who we are
The Islands Knowledge Institute ("IKI", "we", "us") operates this website. We are based at the NPF Food Court Building, Point Cruz, Honiara, Solomon Islands. You can contact us at hello@islands-knowledge.org.
We decide what information this website collects and how it is used. In data protection terms, we are the controller of that information.
3. What we collect
3.1 Information you give us
If you sign up as a member, we ask for your email address. You may also give us a name. We use these to identify your account and to send you the newsletters you have asked for.
If you leave a comment, we store the comment, the name shown on your account, and the time you posted it. Comments are public.
If you email us, we keep that correspondence so we can reply and keep a record of what was discussed.
3.2 Newsletters
We send newsletters using Mailgun. Our newsletter system records whether an email was delivered, whether it was opened, and whether links in it were clicked. We use this only to understand whether our newsletters are working and reaching people. If you would rather we did not record this, you can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of every newsletter, and we will stop sending and stop recording.
3.3 Website analytics
We measure how the website is used so we know which work people find useful. For each page view we record the page address, the page you came from, your browser and device type, your language setting, and the country you are visiting from. We do not record your full IP address alongside this information, and we do not use it to identify you personally.
Visits are grouped into sessions using a temporary identifier that is generated from a secret value we rotate regularly. Once that value is rotated, earlier sessions can no longer be linked to later ones. This is deliberate: it lets us count visits without being able to follow an individual over time.
This measurement does not use advertising cookies and does not track you across other websites. It stores a small amount of data in your browser's local storage to avoid counting the same visit twice.
3.4 Technical records
Our server keeps standard logs of requests made to it, including IP addresses. These exist so we can keep the site running and secure, investigate faults, and identify abuse. They are not used to analyse the behaviour of individual readers.
4. What we do not collect
We think it is as important to say what we do not do. We do not take payments through this website, so we hold no card or banking information. We do not run advertising. We do not use cross-site trackers or social media tracking pixels. We do not sell, rent, or trade your information to anyone. We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you.
5. Why we are allowed to use this information
We use your information because you have asked us to do something — such as send you a newsletter or host your comment — or because we have a genuine and proportionate interest in keeping the website running, secure, and useful. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time.
6. Who else handles your information
We use a small number of service providers to operate the website. They act on our instructions and are not permitted to use your information for their own purposes.
- Mailgun delivers our emails and newsletters.
- Tinybird stores our website analytics.
- Our hosting provider operates the server that runs this website and its database.
We may also disclose information if we are required to by law, or where it is necessary to protect the safety of a person.
7. Where your information is held
Our website and its database run on a server we control. Our email and analytics providers store data on servers in the United States, so information described in sections 3.2 and 3.3 is transferred outside Solomon Islands. We chose providers that offer appropriate protection for that information, and we keep the amount of information sent to them to a minimum.
8. How long we keep it
We keep your membership details for as long as your account exists. If you delete your account or ask us to remove you, we delete your details. Comments remain until you or we remove them. Analytics records are kept in an aggregated form for as long as they remain useful for understanding how the site is used. Technical logs are kept for a short period and then overwritten.
9. Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what information we hold about you;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your account and the information attached to it;
- stop sending you newsletters;
- provide your information in a portable form.
You do not need a reason and you will not be charged. Write to hello@islands-knowledge.org and we will respond within a reasonable period. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled a request, please tell us so we can put it right.
10. Keeping information safe
This website is served over an encrypted connection. Access to the systems holding your information is limited to the people who need it, and those systems are backed up and kept up to date. No system is perfectly secure, but we take this seriously and will tell you promptly if information about you is affected by a breach.
11. Children
This website is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, please contact us and we will remove it.
12. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. Where a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell members by email rather than relying on you to notice.
