Resilience. Innovation. Sovereignty.

Redefining research in the Pacific. We bridge the gap between ancestral wisdom and modern science to build a sustainable future for the Solomon Islands.

Not Just a Field Site. A Living Lab.

For too long, the Pacific has been observed from the outside looking in. The Islands Knowledge Institute (IKI) is changing that. Based in Honiara, we are an independent, Indigenous-led research organization. We believe the solutions to climate change, food security, and conservation already exist—embedded in the customs and landscape of our people.

We don't just collect data. We co-create knowledge with communities to influence national policy and global science.

01

Decolonizing Science

We challenge the "fly-in, fly-out" research model. By centering Solomon Islander scholars and Indigenous methodologies, we ensure that data is owned by the people it affects, shifting the power dynamic from extraction to empowerment.

02

Environmental Stewardship

From the "Sky Islands" of our high forests to the coral reefs of the Melanesian Ocean Reserve, we use GIS technology and biological surveys to validate traditional conservation practices. We prove that custom is the key to sustainability.

03

Future Leaders

Through our Institute of Islands Futures—a partnership with SINU and Arizona State University—we are training the next generation of Pacific thinkers. We provide the academic rigor and global connections our youth need to lead.

Spotlight

The Melanesian Ocean Reserve

We are providing the technical backbone for the world’s first Indigenous-led, multi-national marine park. Spanning the waters of the Solomon Islands, PNG, and Vanuatu, this initiative proves that modern marine science and customary governance can work together to protect our Blue Economy.
